Using the linen from the Aluminium Triformate project, and the narrow Oseberg braid produced from the subsequent project, I created a mostly hand-sewn Birka tunic with trim. The linen is dyed with heather, a material presumed to have been used in Viking period dyeing. The silk for the narrow Oseberg braid is also dyed in the same heather batch, and the alternating silk is dyed with madder.
I'm using Mathew Gnagy's Modern Maker Volume 2 (First Edition) to create a late period yellow doublet. It's a work in progress, by which I mean it's a fun nightmare.

Using period natural dyes from the Alum Triformate experiments I recreated an Oseberg tablet woven band, using Shelagh Lewins' pattern. It took a long time but I was pretty happy with the results. Things I learned from this project: how to keep tighter woven edges, how to fuck up and keep going, and finally, a little bit of patience.

This project combines a non-period mordant with period natural dyes (heather; Calluna vulgaris L. and madder; Rubia tinctorum L.). The rationale behind this is to experiment with cold mordanting and provide more evidence for aluminium triformate as a viable alternative for common mordants.
